Mouse Paint

Good morning Tzeeporim family and friends!

This week we learned about the letter B. We worked on our ABC books with Ms. Carolyn and made beautiful, blue collages with various materials. The word “blue” was our sight word of the week. We looked for it everywhere and added it to our word wall along with many other vocabulary words we learned about.

Our book of the week was Mouse Paint by Ellen Stoll Walsh. The book was about three white mice who fall into paint and then create new colors of paint when they mix the colors together. We learned about mixing colors as well. We added red and blue to make purple, red and yellow to make orange, and blue and yellow to make green.

We created “Mouse Paint” process paintings on real canvas panel. On the first day, we mixed the primary colors red, blue, and yellow together to create secondary colors orange, green, and purple. On the second day, we peeled off a cluster of painters tape we left on the canvas to reveal a white portion of the canvas. We used the white oval to create a mouse.

We colored our own independent reading books about Mouse Paint and kept them in our Library Center so we could read them during the school day. We used them to practice reading all week!

We read many other books about art this week as an avenue to explore some of the elements of art. We read Lines that Wiggle by Candace Whitman to explore the element of line. We also read Mouse Shapes by Ellen Stoll Walsh to explore the element of shape.

Similar to the mice in the book, we used shapes to create our own collage art. Some of us created trains using shapes, some of us created portraits of people, and some even created animals, like mice!

In Jewish Studies, Morah Rachel and Morah Miriam taught us all about Rosh Hashanah. We sang the “Shofar Blast” song by Peter and Ellen Allard. We reviewed all of the important symbols of the holiday, and we read a book entitled, The Apple Tree’s Discovery.

In Science, Ms. Amanda came to our classroom to teach us about bugs, such as bees. It was the perfect topic of conversation this week, because our letter of the week was ‘Bb.’ We read a book called On Beyond Bugs! All About Insects.

In P.E., Ms. Jackie did lots of parachute play with us which enhanced our gross motor skills and required us to use our listening ears.

In Music class, Ms. Zina we enjoyed playing “Head, Shoulders, Knees and Toes.” We also learned a new song from the musical “The Sound of Music” called “Do Re Mi.” We practiced singing it in small groups. At the end of class, Ms. Zina assessed our knowledge of songs and composers. We recognized “Fur Elise” which was composed by Beethoven.

In Gardening, Ms. Amanda taught us about another word that stars with ‘B’… BUBBLES!! We made our own bubble wands in the shape of geometric shapes like circles, squares, triangles, and rectangles. The whole lesson was a fantastic extension of the many topics we learned about this week!

Coach Tommy from the Shining Stars program came to visit us this week. We worked on listening skills with him and did various activities to help build our confidence. The students really loved it! (The preschool will be offering the Shining Stars Dramatic Play Program as an After-School Enrichment class beginning Friday, September 30th. Click here for more information.)

On Friday, everyone in our class had the opportunity to participate in Show and Tell. All students were asked to bring in something that was their favorite color.

Similar to last week, we did our ABC song using a flashlight and took turns adding our weekly vocabulary words to our Word Wall.

We enjoyed when our Mystery Reader read a fun book called How Rocket Learned to Read!

We welcomed Shabbat with the other Tzeeporim class and the Parparim classes.

We enjoyed seeing so many of you at the Galinsky Academy All School Shabbat program and dinner on Friday evening. We hope you are enjoying a wonderful weekend and are looking forward to another great week in Tzeeporim as we prepare for Rosh Hashanah!

Todah rabah,

Ms. Alicia and Ms. Carolyn
